2017 Talent Show

Our annual talent show will take place this Friday, June 2nd, beginning at 6:30pm in the Bates auditorium. The auditorium will be open at 6:00 with pizza for attending guests. We hope to see many families join us to celebrate and enjoy the many talents of our students. As we work to make sure we are prepared, please complete and return this RSVP so we know you’re coming!

BuildBPS Neighborhood Workshop

This Thursday, June 1st, the Boston Public Schools will host a neighborhood workshop for the BuildBPS initiative. At this workshop, you will

  • Learn more about BuildBPS, the ten-year educational and facilities master plan
  • Help BPS decide how to invest $1 billion in Boston’s school buildings
  • Engage in hands-on activities about school renovation and construction projects

Free childcare and refreshments will be provided. The workshop will be from 5:30-8:00pm at the William H. Ohrenberger School (175 West Boundary Rd.). While this workshop is specifically intended for the Roslindale/Hyde Park/West Roxbury neighborhoods, you can learn about other dates here. We hope to see many families there to contribute to this important process.

Staffing Change

Mrs. Arnold, one of our fabulous 5th grade teachers, will be relocating out of state with her family. From Mr. Vega: “I’ve known Karen Arnold for 7 years and in the time we worked together at Orchard Gardens K-8, I came to know her as one of the best teachers I have ever seen. I was thrilled when she decided to join the Bates staff and I thank her for her two years of service to our school community.” As we begin the search for a new 5th grade teacher (Math/Social Studies in Excellence for All), we will interview a group of panelists on Friday June 2nd. If you are a 4th grade parent interested in participating in interviews, please let Mr. Vega know.

Fidget Spinners – BANNED

Recently, fidget spinners have become a popular trend with students. As an inclusion school, we recognize the needs of some students to occupy their hands as a strategy to keep their attention on learning. Unfortunately, this particular tools has caused distractions and, in some cases, conflicts between students. As a result, we are no longer permitting students to bring fidget spinners to school. Should a teacher see a student with a fidget spinner, he/she will confiscate it and return it to the student at the end of the day. If the student brings it a second time, a parent/guardian will have to come to school to pick it up. Please contact the school with questions.

Field Day

Please mark your calendars for two important end-of-year events! Our annual Field Day will be on Friday, June 23rd. We will reach out soon to ask for volunteers.
