Welcome to the Bates School year 2018-2019!

Dear Bates School Community, August 2018

It is with much joy that I send this letter to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year. I have had the pleasure of working with Boston Public Schools for the last eight year. Last year I experienced firsthand the tireless work that goes on day after day to ensure that your children are safe, happy, and learning. In return, students at the Bates school work to meet the high expectations that you and their teachers have set for them.

Our staff are eager to meet their new and returning students and kickoff what will be a great year of learning and growing. We look forward to hearing tales and stories of summer fun and sharing with students our own summer experiences. We are committed to supporting the academic and social-emotional growth of your child and with your support, we will have strong student leaders and a strong academic year.

On a personal note, I am honored and excited to serve as the principal of the Phineas Bates Elementary School for a second year. As a dual language educator, I have a long history with teaching a second language and a personal history of learning English as a second language. I have a strong belief in public education and a commitment to its purpose and goals. It is my career passion to lead with a team of dedicated teachers that work to ensure high-quality education for all of their students.

I am also eager to meet you all at events like the upcoming Popsicles with the Principal and at Parent Council Meetings. I look forward to meeting and working with Bates families to ensure our students are thriving and succeeding.

This letter has much-needed information for a solid start to our school year. If for any reason you need additional information or support please do not hesitate to contact us at 617-635-8064.

Arrival and Dismissal:

The Bates School hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:10 PM. It is very important our students arrive on time and ready to learn. We know from experience and much research that the routines for all students are important to developing habits of work that they carry throughout their school career. Please also begin preparing your kindergartner and young students to enter school and to say goodbye to you. Whether you’re saying goodbye at home or at school, let them know you will see them soon and have a ritual for how to say goodbye (for example, fun handshake, 3 kisses and a whirl, 3 high fives…). This too will become their routine. The academic day begins at 9:30, but we all know that learning begins the moment a student enters the classrooms at 9:15.

A safe and consistent dismissal is equally important. On the first day of school please send a note with the plan for your child’s dismissal (Walker, busser, or in the YMCA after-school program). Dismissal begins promptly at 4:10 PM. Families should wait in the recess area at 4:05 to pick up their children on time. Changes in routine are discouraged because they cause confusion and have a higher risk for errors. Again, your child’s safe arrival is our priority. If there is an emergency requiring a change in dismissal plan please call the main office before 11:30 AM and send a note to your child’s teacher if possible.

Teachers will greet students outside on the playground on Thursday, September 6th at 9:15 morning. Kindergarteners will also be greeted outside on Tuesday the 11th at 9:15 in the morning by their teachers. Please wait with your child until this time. If your child is enrolled in the before-school YMCA program, you do not need to wait with your child.

For those of us with younger children in Kindergarten, research shows that it is best to say goodbye to your child at the playground and allow for teachers to transition them into the classroom. We know this can be challenging, but it is the best way to avoid separation anxiety. Some other tips to prepare our little ones include:

Begin a dialogue about the transition (“Soon you’ll be staying with your teacher and new friends”).
Remind them of when you’ll see them at the end of the day to hear all about their first day.
On the day of, suggest that he wait in line to come in beside a special friend or near the teacher.

Uniforms:

Uniforms are not mandatory but are highly recommended. We are flexible with our uniform as we understand the challenges that come with shopping for children. Our students can wear any white, navy, or light blue top (polos, dress shirts, t-shirts, etc) with a navy or khaki bottom (dresses, skirts, pants, shorts). Students should always wear closed-toe shoes. Every Friday is dress down day as long as the clothing is appropriate for school.

- Back to School Potluck, Thursday, September 13th 5:00pm -7:00pm
  - We ask that families bring dishes to share

Es con mucha alegría que envío esta carta para darle la bienvenida al año escolar del 2018-19. He tenido el placer de trabajar con las Escuelas Públicas de Boston por 8 años. El año pasado tuve la oportunidad de ver con mis propios ojos y experimentar del incansable labor que continúa día tras día para asegurar de que sus hijos están seguros, felices, y aprendiendo. En cambio, nuestros estudiantes trabajan para satisfacer nuestras altas expectativas mientras se divierten.

Nuestro personal está ansioso por conocer a sus nuevos estudiantes y empezar lo que será un gran año de aprendizaje y crecimiento. Esperamos con interés escuchar cuentos e historias de la diversión del verano y compartir con los estudiantes de nuestras propias experiencias del verano. Estamos comprometidos a apoyar el crecimiento emocional académico y social de su hijo y con su apoyo vamos a tener fuertes líderes estudiantiles y un fuerte año académico.

En una nota personal, me siento honrado y emocionado de servir como el director de la Escuela Phineas Bates por un segundo año. Como educador bilingüe, tengo una larga historia con la enseñanza de una segunda idioma y una historia personal aprendiendo Inglés como segunda idioma. Tengo una fuerte creencia en la educación pública y el compromiso de su propósito y objetivos. Es mi pasión dirigir a un equipo de profesores dedicados que trabajan para garantizar una educación de calidad para todos los estudiantes.

También estoy ansioso por conocer a todos ustedes en eventos como Paletas de hielo con el director y en las Reuniones del Consejo de Padres. Estoy ansioso por conocer y trabajar con las familias Bates para asegurar que nuestros estudiantes estén prosperando y teniendo éxito.

* Nuestro horario de la escuela ha cambiado debido a nuestro nuevo Día de Aprendizaje Extendido. Las horas de la escuela Bates es de 9:30 AM a 4:10 PM.Es muy importante que nuestros estudiantes lleguen a tiempo y listos para aprender. Sabemos por experiencia y mucha investigación que las rutinas para todos los estudiantes son importantes para el desarrollo de hábitos de trabajo que llevan a lo largo de su trayectoria escolar. Por favor, también prepare a sus niñitos incluyendo los de kindergarten a entrar a la escuela y despedirse. Ya sea que usted está diciendo adiós en el hogar o en la escuela, dejale saber que los verá pronto. Algunas familias tienen un ritual de cómo decir adiós (por ejemplo: 3 besos y un torbellino, 3 palmadas …). Esto también se convertirá en su rutina. El día académico comienza a las 9:30, pero también se sabe que el aprendizaje comienza en el momento que el estudiante entra su salón a las 9:15. Una salida segura y consistente es igualmente importante. La salida comienza puntualmente a las 4:10 PM. Families deben esperar en el área de recreo a las empezando a las 4:05 para recoger a su hijo/a a tiempo. Cambios en la rutina no es recomendado porque causa confusión y un mayor riesgo de errores. La llegada segura de su hijo es nuestra prioridad. Si hay una emergencia que requiere un cambio en el plan de despido por favor llame a la oficina principal antes de las 11:30 AM y envia una nota al maestro de su hijo si es posible.

Los maestros recibirán a los estudiantes al aire libre en el patio de recreo el jueves día 6 de septiembre a las 9:15 de la mañana, los dos primeros días de clase, y el martes día 11 para los estudiantes de kindergarten. Por favor, espere con su hijo hasta este momento. Si su hijo está inscrito en el programa de la YMCA antes de la escuela, no será necesario esperar con su hijo.

Para aquellos de nosotros con niños más pequeños en Kindergarten, las investigaciones muestran que lo mejor es despedirse de su hijo en el patio de recreo y permitir que los maestros los transfieran al salón de clases. Sabemos que esto puede ser un desafío, pero es la mejor manera de evitar la ansiedad por separación. Algunos otros consejos para preparar a nuestros pequeños incluyen:

Comienza un diálogo sobre la transición (“Pronto te quedarás con tu profesor y nuevos amigos”).
Recuérdales cuándo los verá al final del día para escuchar todo sobre su primer día.
El día de, sugiérele que haga cola para ir junto a un amigo especial o cerca del maestro.

Uniformes:

Los uniformes no son obligatorios, pero son recomendados. Somos flexibles con nuestro uniforme. Entendemos los desafíos que vienen con la compra de uniforme de los niños. Nuestros estudiantes pueden usar polos, camisas de vestir, camisetas, etc. en color azul marino, azul claro, o blanco y faldas/pantalones azul marino o caqui. Los estudiantes siempre deben usar zapatos cerrados. Todos los viernes es día de no uniforme siempre que la ropa sea apropiada para la escuela.

- Paletas de hielo con el director, martes, 29 de agosto 5: 00-6: 00 pm
  - Usted está invitado a unirse a con el director Morales en el área de recreo para saludarlo y disfrutar de una paleta de hielo.
- Primer día de escuela para grados 1-5, jueves, 6 º de septiembre
- Día de vista previa para K1 y K2, viernes, 6 de septiembre a 10 a.m.-11 a.m.
- Primer día de Kindergarten (K0/K1/K2), martes, 11ª de septiembre
- Fiesta del Principio del año/Potluck, jueves, 13 de septiembre de 5:00 -7: 00 pm
  - Pedimos que traigan un aperitivo o acompañante para la cena.
- Reuniones del Consejo de Padres de la Escuela y el Consejo Escolar
