Dear Bates School Families: 9/26/18
There are so many amazing things happening at the Bates! Over the last few weeks, our friends have been doing some amazing learning and community building. Students in K0/K1 worked as a whole class to learn about feelings and routines. The whole class sang our “Whole Body Listening” song! Up in K2, our young learners read stories by Todd Parr and learned about how we are all unique, different, and beautiful. Our first-grade teachers have been using Seesaw as a way to communicate with families, including short snippets of what students are learning and working on. Friends in 2nd grade have been using ipads and scanning QR codes to get to fun books online and practice reading. Students in 102 have been reading stories from Latin America in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Recently they read about ciguapas of the Dominican Republic through their reading of “Secret Footprints” by Julia Alvarez. 3rd graders have been learning about the brain and how it grows with effort and practicing difficult and challenging things. 4th graders have started their first book “Love that Dog”, and fifth graders recently gave their paper bag speeches about their identities! We thank you for partnering with us in making this a successful start to the school year! Below are some updates.
*We ask that families not park in front of the school during arrival/dismissal as the space is for school buses.*

School Parent Council and School Site Council:
Linked is a document sharing the roles of School Site Council and School Parent Council as well as a description of what representative members of SSC are responsible for. Our next meeting will be on 10/10 5:30-7:00. During this meeting families will vote on SSC representatives. As always, food and childcare are provided.
Books
We have books that are free to take in the bin of the outside playground. I will have it open during dismissal with bags for families to take as many books as they’d like!
Roslindale Parade on Sunday 10/14
Families, please fill out the survey (link) so that our parent council can get a sense of how many families would be willing to participate in the annual Roslindale Parade. The annual event showcases the diversity and beauty of the neighborhood. Traditionally Bates and other elementary schools in Roslindale have participated in the parade either by walking or spectating. It’s a fun way to get to know other Bates families and share our school spirit with the rest of Roslindale. To learn more about this special community event you can visit the parade’s official site: www.roslindaleparade.com.
