Dear Bates School Families
It has been a strong come back for our scholars today! From learning about their summer vacations to welcoming new members to our community, our students have shown respect, enthusiasm and kindness on their first day back. In classrooms, students have spent time learning the routines and systems that will allow them to maximize their learning and we cannot wait to explore all the ways possible for them to become the responsible citizens we know they can be.
During recess, students noticed a new rectangular foundation. We shared with students that a new buddy bench would soon be installed thanks to the hard-work of last year’s 4th graders (current 5th graders). As we briefly explained the purpose of the buddy bench, students eyes lit up with enthusiasm! “Does that mean I get to be kind to other classmates if they need a friend! That is awesome!” This is the spirit, warmth, and care, that your children bring to the Bates community. Their generosity is one of the many facets that make our community so special.
About our upcoming Buddy Bench:
The Fourth Grade Class of 2019 (many of this year’s fifth graders!), in partnership with BPS Excellence for All, are excited to bring a much-needed Buddy Bench to the Bates School community! As part of our Capstone Project, fourth graders read the book Wonder, by R. J. Palacio, and were immediately inspired by the themes of kindness and inclusion. So, we wrote a grant to get a school buddy bench for our school yard and it will be installed shortly! If a student has a problem that is hard to solve, needs someone to listen, is new to the Bates community, or feels lonely or excluded in any way, that student can sit on the Buddy Bench to signal to others that they would like a buddy. Fourth graders created both a Google slideshow to share with the student body and a learning tool/game to use during Social Thinking Time for grades 3-5, which will serve as tutorials for how to use our new Buddy Bench! We hope it will encourage everyone to CHOOSE KIND, just as they did in the story Wonder.

Arrival and Dismissal:
The Bates School hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:10 PM. While the academic day begins at 9:30, students can and should enter as soon as 9:15 to have breakfast and prepare for the day. Students should not be dropped off any earlier unless they are enrolled in the before school program. We ask that parents not park in the teacher’s lot or in the bus lane in front of the school. Changing routines (from bus to walker etc.) causes confusion during dismissal. If absolutely necessary to change dismissal routine, call Ms. Cindy by 1:00pm at 617-635-8064.

Teacher Bio:
Hi! My name is Danielle Gervais (Ms. G), and I’m a recent graduate of Northeastern’s Master of Arts in Teaching program. Over the past year, I had the privilege of co-teaching first grade classes at Mendell Elementary in Roxbury. I am excited to be a part of the Bates team as the Long-Term Substitute (first grade room 104) and getting to know this wonderful community. I am looking forward to building relationships with the students and supporting them in their transition into first grade.
Aside from teaching, I spend my free time trying new recipes and restaurants (one of the many reasons I love Boston), doing yoga, gardening, reading, and traveling!

Estimadas familias de la Escuela Bates,
¡Ha sido un fuerte regreso para nuestros eruditos hoy! Desde aprender sobre sus vacaciones de verano hasta dar la bienvenida a nuevos miembros a nuestra comunidad, nuestros estudiantes han mostrado respeto, entusiasmo y amabilidad en su primer día de regreso. En las aulas, los estudiantes han pasado tiempo aprendiendo las rutinas y los sistemas que les permitirán maximizar su aprendizaje y estamos ansiosos por explorar todas las formas posibles para que se conviertan en los ciudadanos responsables que sabemos que pueden ser.
Durante el recreo, los estudiantes notaron una nueva base rectangular. Compartimos con los estudiantes que pronto se instalaría un nuevo “banco de amigos” gracias al arduo trabajo de los alumnos de cuarto grado del año pasado (actuales alumnos de quinto grado). Cuando explicamos brevemente el propósito del banco de amigos, ¡los ojos de los estudiantes se iluminaron con entusiasmo! “¡Eso significa que puedo ser amable con otros compañeros de clase si necesitan un amigo! ¡Eso es genial!” Este es el espíritu, la calidez y el cuidado que sus hijos traen a la comunidad Bates. Su generosidad es una de las muchas facetas que hacen que nuestra comunidad sea tan especial.

Llegada y salida:

Biografía de Maestra:
¡Hola! Mi nombre es Danielle Gervais (Sra. G), y recientemente me gradué del programa de Maestría en Enseñanza de Northeastern. Durante el año pasado, tuve el privilegio de co-enseñar clases de primer grado en Mendell Elementary en Roxbury. Estoy emocionado de ser parte del equipo de Bates como sustituto a largo plazo y de conocer esta maravillosa comunidad.
