Happy Pride!

To our Phineas Bates LGBTQIA students, families, staff and community members:

We wish you a happy pride season!

At the Bates, we work to build a community that celebrates all facets of our students’ identities and find meaningful ways to weave their experiences and cultures into our learning everyday. Inclusion means everyone, and we work diligently to build a school community where every child feels valued for everything he/she/they bring to their classroom.

See information below from BPS and BTU:

Dear Boston Public Schools Community,

The Boston Public Schools (BPS) and the Boston Teachers Union (BTU) are proud to support and celebrate all members of our school community. We are excited to announce that for the third year in a row, we will be marching in the 2019 Boston Pride Parade, the city’s largest annual celebration to promote visibility and acceptance of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) and their allies.

The theme of this year’s family-friendly event is, “Looking Back, Loving Forward,” to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City, a historical moment that led to greater acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.

We ask any BPS students, staff, parents, guardians, and community partners to join us as we march in the 2019 Boston Pride Parade on Saturday, June 8, at 12:00 PM.

Click this link to register to march with BPS and the BTU, or visit the BPS Pride Parade web page for more information. You will receive information via email a few days before the parade with the exact meeting location once the parade lineup is released.

We encourage school and parent leaders to spread the word! If you are interested in forming a small group at your school to attend the parade, please do so and connect with us! Please email us with any questions at lgbtq@bostonpublicschools.org.

In BPS, we are proud and grateful to live and work in a city and a school district that actively supports and affirms the identities of students and employees of all backgrounds, which includes race, language, socioeconomic status, immigration status, and sexual or gender orientation. An inclusive and affirming community is a strong community for all. We thank you for your support and hope to see you at the Pride Parade!

Sincerely,

Perille

Boston Public Schools

Ramadan at the Bates

ramadan sesame street

May 6th, 2019
Dear Bates School Families,
Ramadan started this past Sunday. It is my privilege to share with you what we are doing to support the many Muslim students we have at our school who will be fasting during this month. But first, a quick “What is Ramadan?”:
  • A month each year when many Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset
  • This means: no food, no liquid, no medication, for between 16.25 and 17.5 hours daily, 30 continuous days: Sunday evening, 5/5 through Tuesday evening, 6/4
  • The culmination of this month is the very festive occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, which Muslims celebrate by sharing elaborate meals with family, friends, and their larger communities
To ensure that all students who are fasting can do so in a responsive space, we at the Bates send guidelines to our entire community letting them know what to expect during this month, and how best to support students who are fasting, including providing food-free spaces for students who opt to fast.
At the Bates, we work to build a community that celebrates all facets of our students’ identities and find meaningful ways to weave their experiences and cultures into our learning everyday. We are lucky to be part of a community that views the rights of all children — with all aspects of their identities fully included — as human rights. Thank you for your support in helping us get here. If you have any questions or concerns, I hope that you will reach out to me directly.
With appreciation,
Rodolfo Morales

SSC and the Bates School is proud to partner with local business and provide culturally responsive and relevant materials for all of our diverse learners! We will have evening hours on 1/15th for families that wish to shop at our book fair. Special thank you to parent, Kristen Bonstein, for organizing this event!

Weekly Newsletter – November 14

Dear Bates School Families:

At the Bates School, we continue to focus on growing our understanding and use of culturally responsive teaching. We recognize that Thanksgiving season has often been a customary celebration in our country. However, as we dig deeper into the true history of Thanksgiving, we recognize a need to teach openly and honestly about this land’s history, including that of our indigenous Native American brothers and sisters, many of whom consider Thanksgiving to be a Day of Mourning. November is also Native American Heritage Month. To respect and honor Native American culture, we share some resources that can be useful for us as we celebrate Thanksgiving in an inclusive way.

2016-11-24 13.39.40
Statue of Massasoit, leader of the Wampanoag when the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. You can find this statue on Cole’s Hill where Native Americans have gathered every year on the fourth Thursday of November since 1970 to commemorate the National Day of Mourning.

  • Decolonizing Thanksgiving- Article with resources from Medium

  • Members from the Society for American Archaeology’s Thanksgiving Initiative have prepared a list of resources.

For children of all ages, I hope we will:

  • Investigate the “myths” of Thanksgiving at Plymouth and discuss what we actually know from the perspective of the colonists and the Wampanoag.

  • Emphasize that Native people are still here and are not just part of history. When discussing lifeways of Native people in the past, also talk about ways the colonists lived and how both peoples were different from today.

  • Explain to students that Native groups are all different. Research where you live. Whose territory do you live on today? What are the names of these groups in their own language? Where do they live now? Shift your unit focus to celebrations of gratitude and harvest.

These resources have also been shared among Bates School staff. As lifelong learners, we at the Bates strive and commit to providing inclusive and culturally responsive instruction for all of our students.

Original Works

Good news families!  The annual Original Works fundraiser is underway.  Your students have worked diligently to create works of art for this fundraiser.  Students in kindergarten through grade 2 created reverse fox paintings. Students in grades 3 through 5 created mixed media fish.  Look in your child’s backpack this Friday to find a yellow envelope. Inside you will find your child’s artwork, a catalog, a letter explaining how it all works, and an order form.  If you would like to participate please return the yellow envelope, your child’s artwork, the order form, and payment by Monday, November 19th. Your gift items will arrive in time for the holidays!  Please email Mrs. Drakes, anordlanddrakes@bostonpublicschools.org if you have any questions. Thank you for supporting your child’s art education!
