Parent Newsletter Week 5

Dear Bates School Families     10/04/19

So much learning is happening at the Bates! In K0/K1, students are beginning to  use language from our social-emotional curriculum, Social Thinking and Zones of Regulation. Students are often heard discussing the zones of their emotions and that of characters. During my time in one classroom a K1 student told another students “Hey, mistakes are good because we get to learn from them!” This type of discourse and thinking maximizes learning potential in a way that allows for curiosity, wonder and risk taking to flourish. In K2, students have read the text Abuela and responded to prompts about community. 1st graders have been using ST Math as a blended learning opportunity to problem solve challenging mathematical puzzles. 2nd grade has been learning about their school community through reading and discussing texts about different learners, teachers and schools. In 3rd grade, students are extending the theme of school communities by reading about and discussing schools in different cultures. 4th graders are busy analyzing poetry, exploring vivid words, and determining the central message of different poems as they read the text “Love that Dog”. 5th graders are expanding their understanding of social justice as they read the novel Esperanza Rising and make connections with the themes in that novel to the Declaration of Human Rights and to current news and policies. Additionally, our specialist team has been working hard planning and organizing clubs and leadership jobs for our students in 3-5th! All of this was seen just this week.

Last wednesday, over 30 family members and staff participated in our first School Family Council & School Site Council. We voted for members of each board, shared information around events, discussed homework policies at the Bates. If you’d like to share your thoughts on homework, you are encouraged to so by submitting thoughts through this form. We also hope that you can join us on Wednesday, November 6th, 5:45-7:30 for our next Family Council Session!

Parent Newsletter Week 3

9/16/19

Dear Bates School Families

I want to thank all our amazing families for making this such an amazing start to the school year! Thank you for being as excited as we are about all the learning and fun that students will surely have this year. Over the summer, our team worked diligently  to prepare the school for your children. Mr. Mike and Mr. Eric made sure the school classrooms and hallways were spotless. Mr. Prisby, Ms. Buckley and I worked on grants for healthy snacks for children (see Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program below), our school site and family council met to plan for community events like our upcoming Ice Cream Social. Our teachers took courses and planned units and Ms. Cindy made folders for each student to bring home on week 1 with pertinent beginning of year information. There is no way to express the immense amount of gratitude I have for this team.

Thank you to all the families that came to our Open House and Potluck. If you were unable to make it, please e-mail or check in with your child’s teachers so you can receive a copy of the grade’s syllabus. I ask that ALL families take 5 minutes to answer a few questions about our open house/potluck. Your feedback will help us as we plan for future open houses.

Ver actualizaciones a continuación:

Parent Newsletter Week 2

Dear Bates School Families

Class is in session! As I’ve walked through the school over the last four days I’ve watched students learning about new technologies, others sharing their goals with one another, and have seen countless smiles on both students’ and adults’ faces.  Our new kindergarten learners walked around their new school building while returning students shared about how awesome the school was. It has been an amazing four days of school so far! All in all it has been a fabulous start to what will be an amazing school year! Below are some updates:

Arrival and Dismissal:

The Bates School hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:10 PM. While the academic day begins at 9:30, students can and should enter as soon as 9:15 to have breakfast and prepare for the day. Students should not be dropped off any earlier unless they are enrolled in the before school program. We ask that parents not park in the teacher’s lot or in the bus lane in front of the school. Changing routines (from bus to walker etc.) causes confusion during dismissal. If absolutely necessary to change dismissal routine, call Ms. Cindy by 1:00pm at 617-635-8064.

9/9 First Day for K0-K2

Staff are eager to meet students on the Bates Playground at 9:20. Mr. Morales will say a few words and teachers will bring students into their classrooms. We ask that families allow for this transition as research shows it is best for students as they start their first day of school.

9/12 Open House/ Back to School Potluck 5:00-7:00pm Flyers have been sent home*

This year we will have a hybrid between a “traditional” open house combined with our usual Back to School Potluck. This will give families a chance to meet teachers, see classrooms and build community with the Bates Community. The open house will include two sessions to accommodate parents who have siblings in multiple grades.  Please note that the open house is not a parent teacher conference where individual student questions can be answered.

Open House Session 1: 5:00-5:25

Open House Session 2: 5:30-5:55

Potluck and Celebration: 6:00-7:00

9/18 Ice Cream Social 5:30-7:30 Flyers have been sent home*

Parent Newsletter Week 1

9/5/19

Dear Bates School Families

It has been a strong come back for our scholars today! From learning about their summer vacations to welcoming new members to our community, our students have shown respect, enthusiasm and kindness on their first day back. In classrooms, students have spent time learning the routines and systems that will allow them to maximize their learning and we cannot wait to explore all the ways possible for them to become the responsible citizens we know they can be.

During recess, students noticed a new rectangular foundation. We shared with students that a new buddy bench would soon be installed thanks to the hard-work of last year’s 4th graders (current 5th graders). As we briefly explained the purpose of the buddy bench, students eyes lit up with enthusiasm! “Does that mean I get to be kind to other classmates if they need a friend! That is awesome!” This is the spirit, warmth, and care, that your children bring to the Bates community. Their generosity is one of the many facets that make our community so special.

About our upcoming Buddy Bench:

The Fourth Grade Class of 2019 (many of this year’s fifth graders!), in partnership with BPS Excellence for All, are excited to bring a much-needed Buddy Bench to the Bates School community!  As part of our Capstone Project, fourth graders read the book Wonder, by R. J. Palacio, and were immediately inspired by the themes of kindness and inclusion. So, we wrote a grant to get a school buddy bench for our school yard and it will be installed shortly!  If a student has a problem that is hard to solve, needs someone to listen, is new to the Bates community, or feels lonely or excluded in any way, that student can sit on the Buddy Bench to signal to others that they would like a buddy. Fourth graders created both a Google slideshow to share with the student body and a learning tool/game to use during Social Thinking Time for grades 3-5, which will serve as tutorials for how to use our new Buddy Bench!  We hope it will encourage everyone to CHOOSE KIND, just as they did in the story Wonder.

Teacher Bio:

Hi! My name is Danielle Gervais (Ms. G), and I’m a recent graduate of Northeastern’s Master of Arts in Teaching program. Over the past year, I had the privilege of co-teaching first grade classes at Mendell Elementary in Roxbury. I am excited to be a part of the Bates team as the Long-Term Substitute (first grade room 104) and getting to know this wonderful community. I am looking forward to building relationships with the students and supporting them in their transition into first grade.

Aside from teaching, I spend my free time trying new recipes and restaurants (one of the many reasons I love Boston), doing yoga, gardening, reading, and traveling!

Welcome to School Year 2019-2020

Dear Bates School  Community,                     August 2019

It is with much joy that I send this letter to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year. I have had the pleasure of working with Boston Public Schools for the last nine years. Last year I re-experienced firsthand the tireless work that goes on day after day to ensure that your children are safe, happy, and learning. In return, students at the Bates school work to meet the high expectations that you and their teachers have set for them.

Our staff are eager to meet their new and returning students and kickoff what will be a great year of learning and growing. We look forward to hearing tales and stories of summer fun and sharing with students our own summer experiences. We are committed to supporting the academic and social emotional growth of your child and with your support we will have strong student leaders and a strong academic year.

On a personal note, I am honored and excited to serve as the principal of the Phineas Bates Elementary School for a third year. As a dual language educator, I have a long history with teaching a second language and a personal history learning English as a second language. I have a strong belief in public education and a commitment to its purpose and goals. It is my career passion to lead with a team of dedicated teachers that work to ensure high quality education for all of their students.

I am also eager to meet you all at events like the upcoming Popsicles with the Principal and at Family Council Meetings. I look forward to meeting and working with Bates families to ensure our students are thriving and succeeding.

This year, the Bates School will be adding a co-leader from Boston College’s Lynch Leadership Academy. Lynch Fellow, Antonelli Mejía, is eager and excited to join Team Bates and continue his work in supporting students, families, and teachers. See his bio:

Antonelli Mejía:Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Antonelli migrated to the United States in 2009 where he started his journey in Boston Public Schools as a student and later on as an ESL teacher, community coordinator and support counselor. He has a history of supporting students and families, particularly those who are recent immigrants to the country and are facing language barriers. In addition to his passion for working with students in the public district, Antonelli is also the founder of a nonprofit organization called, Herramientas Del Saber that aids educational readiness of students in his home country, the Dominican Republic. His experience in education has stretched between the charter and public school sector. Last year, Antonelli participated in the Aspiring Latino Leaders Fellowship Program, where he co-lead a consultancy project to increase family engagement for a school in the BPS district and recently served as a Lead School Culture Coordinator at the Up Academy Network, supporting school-wide systems to ensure the safety and positive experience for all students.

Antonelli has collaborated in different projects with nonprofit organizations such as Educators For Excellence, where he co-wrote a research paper titled “Schools That Heal.” A research that proposed policy recommendations supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of students. Antonelli was also selected by the Univision Network, as one of three educators in the country for the “Nuestros Maestros” campaign, sharing his story to inspire other Latinos to pursue careers in education and become leaders in their communities.

Antonelli holds a B.A. in Psychology and Human Resources from Boston College, and a Master’s of Education and Curriculum Training from Boston University.

This letter has much needed information for a solid start to our school year. If for any reason you need additional information or support please do not hesitate to contact us at 617-635-8064.

Arrival and Dismissal:

The Bates School hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:10 PM. It is very important that our students arrive on time and ready to learn. We know from experience and much research that the routines for all students are important to developing habits of work that they carry throughout their school career. Please also begin preparing your kindergartner and young students to enter school and to say goodbye to you. Whether you’re saying goodbye at home or at school, let them know you will see them soon and have a ritual for how to say goodbye (for example, fun handshake, 3 kisses and a whirl, 3 high fives…). This too will become their routine. The academic day begins at 9:30, but we all know that learning begins the moment a student enters the classrooms at 9:15.

A safe and consistent dismissal is equally important. On the first day of school, please send a note with the plan for your child’s dismissal (walker, busser, or in the YMCA after school program). Dismissal begins promptly at 4:10 PM. Families should wait in the recess area at 4:05 to pick up their children on time. Changes in routine are discouraged because they cause confusion and have a higher risk for errors. Again, your child’s safe arrival is our priority. If there is an emergency requiring a change in dismissal plan please call the main office before 11:30 AM and send a note to your child’s teacher if possible.

Teachers will greet students outside on the playground on Thursday September 5th at 9:15 in the  morning. Kindergarteners will also be greeted outside on Tuesday the 9th at 9:15 in the morning by their teachers. Please wait with your child until this time. If your child is enrolled in the before-school YMCA program, you do not need to wait with your child.

For those of us with younger children in Kindergarten, research shows that it is best to say goodbye to your child at the playground and allow for teachers to transition them into the classroom. We know this can be challenging, but it is the best way to avoid separation anxiety. Some other tips to prepare our little ones include

  • Begin a dialogue about the transition (“Soon you’ll be staying with your teacher and new friends”).
  • Remind them of when you’ll see them at the end of the day to hear all about their first day.
  • On the day of, suggest that he wait in line to come in beside a special friend or near the teacher.

Uniforms:

The Bates School will no longer be a “uniform school”. This decision comes from multi-year conversations around equity with key stakeholders including our School and Family Council.

Warmly,
Rodolfo Morales

Rodolfo Morales, Principal
