MCAS

The State education department is generating “Parent Reports” with individual student results that BPS will distribute in the coming weeks. You can also visit the DESE website www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/parents and https://www.bostonpublicschools.org/reports here parent guides and other resources are available to learn more about the new MCAS test. BPS will also be sending parents a letter explaining to them the new process this year. A few notes on the MCAS results:

  • Getting a “meets expectations” is harder than what getting “proficient” was on past MCAS. The test is more rigorous as are the leveling criteria.
  • Because it is a new test, the scores will be used as a baseline and will not affect our school’s level status.
  • The MCAS is only one assessment of your child’s progress and learning. Teacher’s in grades 1-5 will be sending out progress reports in November with additional information on your child’s progress.

An update on Safety Protocols

There were some concerns last Friday over police activity near the Bates. Last Friday a parked car was sideswiped. Police officers were in front of the street and came to the school to see if the car belonged to a staff member or parent. While there was no imminent danger or emergency, we want to ensure families that the school community did a safety protocols drill in September and will also practice again in December and April.

October 2 – Weekly Newsletter

Dear Families,                                                                                                             10/2/17

Thank you for your support in ensuring a successful first month of school. It is hard to believe that we are already well into our second month of school. Each day, I continue to witness students exemplifying our Core Values:

  • Last week a fifth grader showed respect and kindness by helping organize our reading nook in the foyer without being asked.
  • Kindergarteners (K0-K2) have been working on what it means to be safe always when walking down the hallways or when using classroom materials.
  • In 2nd grade, students demonstrated excellent work by using manipulatives like cubes and drawings to show their addition work.

Our students will continue practicing these habits and will continue to get better and better at their demonstration.

Many events took place throughout this week as well:

  • 1st grade has started their guided reading groups with their teachers.
  • 3rd-5th grade started learning about new instruments through Making Music Matters.
  • 3rd grade also enjoyed a field trip to Fenway Park!
  • 4th grade received new comfortable furniture for independent reading and work time.
  • 5th graders were able to perform some readers theater using new vocabulary words and acting out scenes from Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh.

I’ve also seen the community come together during these recent events that have rocked parts of our nation including the various hurricanes. Some homerooms are working to support places like Puerto Rico through fundraising. Students have also shared ways their families are working to support one another. For example, we were able to donate books to a family that is sending materials to schools in Puerto Rico. In another room, a student wore red in solidarity with the people affected by hurricane Maria. Families have checked in on one another and continue to support with kind words.

Below are a few updates:

Terra-Nova/AWC

Families in 3-5th have received letters about Terra-Nova testing taking place this week. Another copy of these letters have been sent today to families of 3-4th grade. Please review the letter and sign if you wish for your child not to take the test.

Boston Bikes

20171002_153214Boston Bikes will be in the school for the next two weeks. Boston Bikes helps students from grades 2 to 12 learn bicycle safety through lessons, practice, and having fun. Those students whose parents have signed waivers will be participating over the next two weeks.

Roslindale Parade

Thank you to all the families that came together with the Conley School to view the Roslindale Parade. We had about 30 families altogether cheering and representing the Bates/Conley. It was great to see so many families come together and enjoy the beautiful Sunday weather.

September 18 – Weekly Newsletter

Hello Bates School families,                                                       September 18th, 2017

Class is in session! As I’ve walked through the school over the last week I’ve seen students learning about new technologies, classrooms of students sharing their goals with one another, and have seen countless smiles on both students’ and adults’ faces. I also got completely soaked during the surprise rainstorm at our Back to School BBQ. What an experience! A special thank you to all who came by, brought food, and those who helped with grilling. We appreciate your partnership with us as we know it is essential for our school to continue to be successful. Below are some updates and information for Bates School families.

School Parent Council (SPC) / School Site Council (SSC)

All families are invited to our first informal meet and greet SPC meeting THIS Tuesday, September 19th from 5:30-7:00pm. SSC/SPC elections will be held on October 12th at 5:30pm.

Making Music Matters

Lessons being next week! We are currently enrolling 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in Making Music Matters, a program of free group music lessons on flute, clarinet, trumpet and violin.  Third graders will study each instrument in 7-week rotations, and 4th and 5th graders have the opportunity to choose one instrument to study.  Lessons are during the school day, and free of charge, but we do require a $50 money order to pay for instrument rental. (Please inquire at your school office for scholarship assistance.)  Visit http://www.mmmboston.org and click on “For Parents” to download and print out enrollment forms, or check your child’s backpack!  We need to have your forms returned this week so that we can hand out instruments at our lessons next week.  Please email makingmusicmatters@gmail if you have any questions.

Bates Apparel Orders

Bates apparel order forms have been sent home. Families and staff can order online (https://thephineasbates.org/bates-uniform-store/) as well. We’re taking orders through the end of September and will deliver them to classrooms a few weeks after that.

YMCA/ Before and After School Program

We still have seats available for our before and after school program. If you are interested in having your child attend before and/or after school, please contact Amber at ACarroll@ymcaboston.org

BPS Guides

New this year, the Boston Public Schools is encouraging families to view the annual “Guide to the Boston Public Schools” and fill out the necessary back-to-school forms by accessing the BPS website at www.bostonpublicschools.org/familyguide . The Guide is available in English and nine other languages. This helpful guidebook contains summaries of many of the district’s policies, programs, and services. A separate booklet contains forms that need to be completed by parents, or students 18 or over. A limited number of the printed guides, as well as booklets containing the forms, will be available at our school office for the families of students who are new to the district or do not have access to the Internet. The online form is available at www.bostonpublicschools.org/contact.

We encourage you to go online to complete the form for each of your children as soon as possible. Please note that teachers are working to integrate 21st century learning practices such as using technology. It is important that we have your permission, through the online form, to allow children to take part in projects that use technology and the internet. We thank you for your cooperation.

Arrival and Dismissal

Doors open at 9:15 AM. Students should not be left unattended before this time as it poses a safety risk. Families should wait at the Bates playground for walkers to be dismissed at 4:05 PM. We ask that families try not to change dismissal routines as it can cause confusion for students at the end of the day. If for any reason the dismissal routines must be changed (busser will be a walker, no after school) please make sure to inform your child’s teacher. This can be done with a brief note or by calling the office before 12:30pm. Lastly, please be sure to pick up your child by 4:10 pm. With limited adults in the building after dismissal, it becomes a safety risk to have children waiting by the office to be picked up. We thank you for understanding and working with us to make sure your children are safe at all times.

September 12 – Weekly Newsletter

Hello Bates School families,                                                                    September 12th, 2017

It has truly been an amazing two weeks at the Bates School. Days 1 and 2 for first through fifth grade were filled with smiles, laughter, and learning, both from students and staff. By mid-day I saw each classroom working on routines, sharing about their summers, and engaging in projects. We also had a wonderful morning greeting our kindergarten students and families. I speak for the Bates School Staff when I say that we are excited for all of the growth and learning that will take place this school year! Below are some updates and information for Bates School families.

BPS Guides

New this year, the Boston Public Schools is encouraging families to view the annual “Guide to the Boston Public Schools” and fill out the necessary back-to-school forms by accessing the BPS website at www.bostonpublicschools.org/familyguide . Fire Drill and Safety Mode Drill

The Bates school will hold a fire drill and a safety mode drill on Thursday morning. Teachers will have conversations with students so they know that these drills are just practice so that we are ready to always be at our safest. We ask that you also discuss with your child that they might hear a loud alarm during the fire drill and that it is just practice for now. Let them know it is important to listen to the adults in the building and to be silent as they walk calmly through their fire drill route.

Arrival and Dismissal

Doors open at 9:15 AM. Students should not be left unattended before this time as it poses a safety risk. Families should wait at the Bates playground for walkers to be dismissed at 4:05 PM. Welcome Back!

August 2017

Dear Bates Community,

It is with much joy that I send this letter to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year. I have had the pleasure of getting to know the Phineas Bates School since June and recognize the gem of a community that the Bates is. Through conversations with students, teachers, families and support staff, I’ve learned of the tireless work that goes on day after day to ensure that your children are safe, happy, and learning. In return, our students work to meet our high expectations and have fun while doing so.

Our staff are eager to meet their new and returning students and kick off what will be a great year of learning and growing. We look forward to hearing tales and stories of summer fun and sharing with students our own summer experiences. We are committed to supporting the academic and social emotional growth of your child and with your support, we will have strong student leaders and a strong academic year.

On a personal note, I am honored and excited to serve as the principal of the Phineas Bates Elementary School. As a dual language educator, I have a long history with teaching a second language and a personal history learning English as a second language. I have a strong belief in public education and a commitment to its purpose and goals. It is my career passion to lead with a team of dedicated teachers that work to ensure high-quality education for all of their students.

I am also eager to meet you all at events like the upcoming Popsicles with the Principal and at Parent Council Meetings. I look forward to meeting and working with Bates families to ensure our students are thriving and succeeding.

This letter has much-needed information for a solid start to our school year. If for any reason you need additional information or support please do not hesitate to contact us at 617-635-8064.

Arrival and Dismissal:

* Our school hours have changed due to our new Extended Learning Day. The Bates School hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:10 PM. It is very important our students arrive on time and ready to learn. We know from experience and much research that the routines for all students are important to developing habits of work that they carry throughout their school career. Please also begin preparing your kindergartner and young students to enter school and to say goodbye to you. Whether you’re saying goodbye at home or at school, let them know you will see them soon and have a ritual for how to say goodbye (for example, fun handshake, 3 kisses and a whirl, 3 high fives…). This too will become their routine. The academic day begins at 9:30, but well know that learning begins the moment a student enters the classrooms at 9:15. We will announce each morning when it is time to say goodbye.

A safe and consistent dismissal is equally important. On the first day of school please send a note with the plan for your child’s dismissal (walker, busser, or in the YMCA after school program). Dismissal begins promptly at 4:10 PM. Families should wait in the recess area at 4:05 to pick up their children on time. Changes in routine are discouraged because they cause confusion and have a higher risk for errors. Again, your child’s safe arrival is our priority. If there is an emergency requiring a change in dismissal plan please call the main office before 11:30 AM and send a note to your child’s teacher if possible.

Teachers will greet students outside on the playground on Thursday and Friday at 9:15 morning, the first two days of school. Kindergarteners will also be greeted outside on Monday the 11th at 9:15 in the morning by their teachers. Please wait with your child until this time. If your child is enrolled in the before-school YMCA program, you do not need to wait with your child.

Uniforms:

Uniforms are not mandatory but are highly recommended. We are flexible with our uniform as we understand the challenges that come with shopping for children. Our students can wear any white, navy, or light blue top (polos, dress shirts, t-shirts, etc) with a navy or khaki bottom (dresses, skirts, pants, shorts). Students should always wear closed-toe shoes. Every Friday is dress down day as long as the clothing is appropriate for school.

Important Dates:

    • Popsicles with the Principal, Tuesday, August 29th 5:00-6:00pm
      • You are invited to join Principal Morales on the Bates Playground for a meet greet and some popsicles!
